Patrick Califia (born Pat Califia 1954, also called by the name California- Rice) is an American writer of non-fiction articles on sexuality as well as of poems and erotic fiction. Califia is bisexual transman. Prior to his transition his identity, he was lesbian and, as the result, wrote for a number of years a sex-related advice column for gay men’s journal, the leather Drummer. His writings focus on gender identity and sexuality and have included lesbian-themed sexuality and work on BDSM subcultures. Califia is part of the movement known as the third wave.

Califia California is “one of [the] earliest champions of lesbian sadomasochistic sex” who’s “work has been taught on college campuses across the country and abroad.” The man has an extensive track record of transgressions, identifying himself as a lesbian, feminist and transgender, while sometimes encountering rejection from the respective community “for various infractions.” He was a part of what some described as to be a “notable role” in the Feminist Sex Wars of the 1970s and 1980s. The parties were defined by anti-porn feminists and feminists who were sex-positive, and had differences on sexuality, pornography and other kinds of sexual representations and prostitution, the place of trans women within the lesbian community as well as lesbian sexual practices, sadomasochism, as well as various other issues related to sexuality. Califia rejected the “essentialist, feminist ideology – that women are better, more nurturing, more peaceful, more loving, more relationship-oriented and less raunchy in bed,” instead advocating for BDSM, “the consensual integration of power, pain, domination and submission into sex.” As per The San Francisco Chronicle, many feminists were influenced by Califia’s views about S/M not through her arguments but by his erotic stories: “they read Califia-Rice’s S/M fantasies, got turned on and got over it.”

Califia co-founded Samois, a lesbian-feminist BDSM organization based in San Francisco that existed from 1978 to 1983, and shifted his focus to the lesbian experience of BDSM. The Samois Collective produced, with Califia’s contributions, the book, Coming to Power, published by Alyson Publications. Coming To Power, according to editor in chief Heather Findlay of lesbian magazine Girlfriends, was “one of the most transformative lesbian books, [foretelling] the end of a certain puritanism that had dominated the community. It was the first articulate defense of lesbian S/M, and that was the end of it.” Another book, the Lesbian S/M Safety Manual, won the 1990 Bookseller/Diagram Prize for Oddest Title of the Year.
