Battiston is a particular hero of that 1982 FIFA World Cup semi final in Seville during which France played West Germany. It was the German goalkeeper Harald Schumacher, raced towards Battiston when the Frenchman was taking his shot, but missed the goal. Schumacher ran into the air, bending his body, and striking Battiston. As a result, his hip struck the Frenchman’s face. Battiston was smashed and was thrown to the ground in unconsciousness, with broken vertebrae and teeth broken, and later falling into an induced state of coma. Medical emergency personnel had to administer oxygen to the pitch. Michel Platini later said that he believed it was possible that Battiston was dead due to the fact that “he had no pulse and looked pale”.
Battiston was a player who earned 56 caps for his national team with three goals. He played for France in the 1982, 1978 as well as the 1986 World Cups, and contributed to France to win the 1984 European Football Championship.

Patrick Raymond Jean Battiston (born 12 March 1957) is a French former professional footballer who was a defender in the France national team during three World Cups and won the 1984 European Football Championship. At club level the team he played for was Metz Saint-Etienne, Metz, Bordeaux and Monaco with the goal of winning 5 Ligue 1 titles and one Coupe de France.
The birthplace of Battiston was Amneville, Moselle, Battiston began his football career at the an lower-league club Talange (1966-1973) until being spotted and bought by FC Metz (1973-1980). After seven years with the club, he joined Saint-Etienne (1980-1983) over three consecutive years. There, they were crowned in 1981 the Division 1 title, before shifting into Bordeaux (1983-1987) and where they won the 1984 1985 , and 1987 titles in the league, as well as 2 Coupe de France. Battiston was then transferred into Monaco (1987-1989) in which they took the title of league champion in 1988, prior to his return in Bordeaux (1989-1991).
