Patricia O’Brien (born 8 February 1957) began her duties as ambassador of Ireland in France and Monaco in August of 2017. The Ambassador was in office from 2013 to 2013 as the permanent representative (Ambassador) for Ireland for the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva. From 2008 to 2013, she served as Legal Counsel and Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs at the United Nations, the first ever woman to hold that position. In her position she headed in the direction of the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs. She was named to the position by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in August 2008.
In October of 2017, she received her Woman Lawyer of the Year award from the Irish Women Lawyers Association.
Prior to her appointment at the UN O’Brien was the Legal Advisor to the Department of Foreign Affairs in Ireland from 2003. Prior to that, she was a Senior Legal Advisor in the office of the Irish Attorney General as well as a Legal Counsellor for the Irish Permanent Representation to the European Union in Brussels.
