Leach was born in St Asaph to Mike – an ex- Wales B Rugby international as well as Sally Leach. He was a student at Rydal Penrhos Senior School situated in Colwyn Bay, where his father worked as a coach for rugby. At Rydal, Leach mostly played cricket. In 2000 at the age 14 he started taking part for Colwyn Bay’s Liverpool and District Cricket Competition for Colwyn Bay, for whom played until 2009. He was briefly on trials at Glamorgan County Cricket Club in the summer of 2002. He was playing for their under-17s team in match that were played against Monmouth School and Wiltshire Under-17s. Three years later, he was chosen to join Wales Minor Counties. Wales Minor Counties in a Minor Counties Championship match against Shropshire in Colwyn Bay. He bowled 11 overs during the first innings and took no wickets , scoring the score of 63 and was not bowling in the following innings , and did not bat during either innings.
Leach was offered a contract by Leach was offered a contract with the Dragons during the month of August, however, an injury to his ankle in the early stages of the season meant Leach missed a lot of the 2009-10 season. He returned for Newport RFC in a game against Bedwas RFC in January 2010 after which he went on to make another 15 appearances prior to the close of the season. It led to his Dragons debut against the Ospreys on May 7, 2010. He was substituted with Tom Riley after 66 minutes.
Leach also played union rugby during his time at Rydal as well, both for the school as well as for Colwyn Bay RFC. After leaving his school Leach was a member of Orrell RUFC however, he then went back home to Colwyn Bay. He stayed two years at Colwyn Bay before joining Manchester Rugby Club and was able to make it part of one of the first teams. It led to appearances for Cheshire as well as for Cheshire in the England Counties team’s tour of Japan and South Korea in 2009. The following the year before, Leach had a two-week trial with English Premiership side Worcester Warriors which was followed by two weeks with Newport Gwent Dragons at a training camp in Aberystwyth.

The year 2008 was the time Leach received a call to take on Wales for a tri- day cricket match with the Marylebone Cricket Club at the SWALEC Stadium.
