Mark Durkan (born 26 June 1960) is an Irish politician from Northern Ireland. Durkan served as the first deputy Prime Minister in Northern Ireland from 2001 to 2002, and was the leader in the Social Democratic and Labour Party between 2001 and 2010. Durkan ran for the Dublin constituency of Fine Gael at the 2019 European Parliament election.

In the year 1990, Durkan was elected chairperson of the SDLP which in which he remained until. Durkan was a crucial participant in the party’s negotiation team during the lead-up towards the Good Friday Agreement. After the Agreement the politician was elected as a member of the Northern Ireland Assembly in 1998 and then became an official Member of the Northern Ireland Executive as Minister for Finance and Personnel. He held that post until 2001, when he was appointed to replace Seamus Mallon as Deputy First Minister. Durkan was elected as the leader of the SDLP in the following year. Durkan was elected to the Assembly at the time of the election in November 2003. However the Assembly as well as the Executive was suspended. In the general election of 2005, Durkan retained the Foyle seat in Westminster in the SDLP. With Hume’s support, Durkan won with a comfortably majority, despite an intense campaign of Sinn Fein to take the seat. Durkan won 21,119 votes, which is 46.3 percent of the vote.

He joined Fine Gael in March 2019 to contest the 2019 European Parliament election for the Dublin constituency.

He was a political science student in the Queen’s University of Belfast (QUB) and then completed a postgraduate degree on public Policy Management with the University of Ulster at Magee. When at QUB Durkan was Vice President of the Queen’s Student Union from 1982 to 1983. Durkan was also elected as Deputy president of the Union of Students in Ireland between 1982 and 1984.
