Pat Cadigan (born September 10 1953) is an American science fiction writer who’s work is often associated with Cyberpunk as a movement. Her short stories and novels have an underlying theme that explores the connection between human beings and the technology.

One of her first stories was published in Rock On (1981), and in 1998, she contributed her own story for the compilation Disco 2000.

In 2013, Cadigan announced that she had been diagnosed with cancer.

Cadigan has won a number of awards. These include a 2013 Hugo Award for “The Girl-Thing Who Went Out for Sushi” in the Best Novelette category, presented at LoneStarCon 3, the 71st World Science Fiction Convention, held in San Antonio, Texas over the 2013 Labor Day weekend, and the Arthur C. Clarke Award both in 1992 and 1995 for her novels Synners and Fools.

Cadigan published her first published science fiction novel in the year 1980. Her writing success prompted her to pursue an author full-time in 1987. She moved into London to the UK with her son Rob Fenner in 1996, in which she was engaged to her husband of three years, Christopher Fowler (not to be confused with the writer who is the author of this story). She was made an UK citizen in the latter part of 2014.

In the 1960s, Cadigan along with a friend from childhood “invented a whole secret life in which we were twins from the planet Venus” she explained to National Public Radio. It was said that the Beatles “came to us for advice about their songs and how to deal with fame and other important matters,” Cadigan states. “On occasion, they would ask us to use our highly developed shape-shifting ability to become them, and finish recording sessions and concert tours when they were too tired to go on themselves.” The Venusian twins also had superpowers which they could utilize to aid Superman, Wonder Woman and other heroes, she explained.

Cadigan first met her wife Rufus Cadigan while in college They divorced shortly after she completed her degree from KU in the year 1975. The same year, Cadigan was a member of an organization for conventions called MidAmeriCon which was the 34th World Science Fiction Convention which was hosted in Kansas City, Missouri, in the year 1976. Labor Day weekend; she was part of that committee and was the guest liaison for the guest writer Robert A. Heinlein, in addition to working with fantasy author Tom Reamy at his Nickelodeon Graphics graphic design and typesetting firm. After the death of Reamy on the 27th of July in 1977 Cadigan was employed as a journalist for the city’s Hallmark Cards. In the latter part of the 1970s and the beginning of the 1980s, she edited the small-press fantasy and science Fiction magazines Chacal and, later, Shayol together with her second partner, Arnie Fenner.

Robert A. Heinlein in part dedicated his 1982 novel Friday to Cadigan after becoming her friend, following her being the guest liaison to him for the 34th Worldcon in Kansas City.
