The 2000 USA Indoor Championships she took second place in the 60-meter race and set a personal record. She finished eighth at the United States Olympic Trials – the result earned her the distinction to be the alternative heat runners of the United States at the 2000 Summer Olympics. In the 2000 Sydney Olympics she sprinted the team in the semi-final and heat stages together with Chryste Gaines Torri Edwards, and Nanceen Perry. Perry was later substituted to Marion Jones in the final. Jones later admitted to using performance- enhancing drugs during the games. Richardson along with the other athletes filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport to challenge their disqualification and to keep their medals. In defense of her decision she stated during an interview on The Early Show: “I competed fairly. I should not have to suffer the consequences for someone else’s bad decisions and choices…I don’t believe that I should have to give back my medal…you don’t know what was going on in the other teams, so how do you really rectify that situation? There’s really no positive outcome in either way that it goes.”
She retired from the sport in 2001 and returned to her alma mater, the University of Kentucky, as a track coach.
In addition to her Olympic performance, she was also the relay gold medalist at the 1997 Summer Universiade and silver medalist at the 1999 Pan American Games. In her own way she finished as a 100-m sprint medalist in the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 1999 and 2000. Her most impressive national performance was second place in the 60-meter race during the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships in 2000.

In Fort Bragg, North Carolina She grew up in Ohio and went to Berea High School, Berea, OH. When she graduated in 1993, she was able to pursue a degree in marketing and management at The University of Kentucky. There she played athletically as a member of Kentucky Wildcats. Kentucky Wildcats and gained four All-American distinctions. She was an indoor 55m finalist both in 1994 and 1996, a 4×100 metre relay finalist in the year 1996, and a 100m finalist in 1997.
In 1997, she broke her personal record of 11.28 seconds in the 100 m race in the United States Outdoor Track and Field Championships. In addition, she won her first medal at an international level in 1997, winning the gold medal in the 4×100 m relay in the 1997 World University Games. The end of the year, she recorded an all-time best of 7.20 seconds in the 60-meter race. She was close to winning the medal she won in 1998 at the United States Indoor Track and Field Championships but ended up in fourth spot. The event was not able to pass to the semifinals in the outdoor 100m race later in the year. In 1999, she was a finalist both in the 60 meters (sixth) and 100 meters (eighth) in the championships for national teams. Another international relay gold medal was awarded to Richardson during in 1999 at the Pan American Games, as the team won silver medals.
She had most of her success with the American women’s 4×100 m relay team. She ran in the heats at the 2000 Summer Olympics and the Americans won the bronze medal in the final. Marion Jones (who replaced Richardson in the final) later admitted to doping and Richardson and her teammates lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport in order to retain their medals.
