He was born from Berchidda, Sardinia, he started playing the trumpet at 11 and was a member of the group the Bernardo de Muro in his hometown of Berchidda. Fresu earned his degree from the Conservatory of Cagliari in 1984 and studied trumpet under Enzo Morandini. He then went to his first University of Bologna School of performing and music in Bologna. The band made its debut in 1985, following an album release. debut album Ostinato.
