On the 26th of May, 2011 Israeli defense minister Ehud Barak authorized her appointment as the head of the Israeli Defense Force’s Manpower Directorate, replacing Maj. Gen. Avi Zamir. The elevation of Barbivai the mother of three children, up to Major General rank was hailed by Israeli opposition leader Tzipi Livni. She stated she believed that “there is no rank that is too heavy for a woman’s shoulders, and there is no doubt that Brig.-Gen. Barbivai was appointed because of her talents”.

Barbivai was drafted into IDF in 1981 and has served her entire time as an officer in the Manpower Directorate. Barbivai is a graduate of the Bachelor’s degree of Humanities and Social Sciences in addition to Humanities in the field of Humanities and Social Sciences from Ben Gurion University, and an MBA Administration degree at Haifa University.
