Nicolas Moussiopoulos is one of the most popular and richest University Teacher who was born on January 1, 1956 in Athens, Attica, Greece. In Athens 1957, Moussiopoulos was a student of mechanical Engineering within the Universitat Karlsruhe (now Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, KIT) from 1973 until 1978. He was awarded his degree in 1977 at the Von Karman Institute of Fluid Mechanics in Sint-Genesius-Rode, Belgium. After completing his doctoral study from 1982, at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Karlsruhe with a specialization in transport phenomena, he was appointed an instructor in the University of Karlsruhe, where he headed a research team which developed mathematical models to explain the spread of air pollution in the air. From 1986 until 1987, he was also an instructor in Kassel’s Gesamthochschule in Kassel. Following the successful conclusion of his postdoctoral lecture qualifications (“Habilitation”) in 1987, he was named Full Professor at the School of Mechanical Engineering of the Aristotle University Thessaloniki. Since 1990, he’s also the Director of the University’s Laboratory of Heat Transfer and Environmental Engineering. Additionally, since 1996 the Honorary Professor is of the KIT’s School of Mechanical Engineering.
Moussiopoulos has spoken to a number of Greek Ministers and has as well as represented Greece in various international committees. Since 2002, he is an active part of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. The same year, he was presented with an Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. In 2012, the Royal Society appointed him Associate Editor of Philosophical Transactions A, the oldest scientific journal in the world. Since 2015 Moussiopoulos is the General Secretary of the Hellenic Chapter of the Club of Rome. In June of 2018 Moussiopoulos was elected as a member of the Scientific Council of the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation that is with responsibility for engineering and technology sciences. He was awarded the Gerhard Hess Award of the German Research Association, the Heinrich Hertz Award (1990) and the Aristotle University’s Excellence Prize (2008).
