He is Associate Editor of The Journal of Intellectual Capital, Chief Knowledge Officer of Knexa Solutions, the first knowledge exchange auction in the world.
Bontis, a tenured professor with an international reputation, teaches business strategy to undergraduates and knowledge management to MBAs. He also teaches advanced statistics to doctoral students. He also coordinates the fourth-year commerce capstone course. He was the first professor to be awarded three Outstanding Teaching Awards simultaneously in 2007: Undergraduate instructor of year, MBA instructor and McMaster University instructor. He was also awarded the faculty researcher award for the business school. Maclean’s has ranked him as McMaster’s most admired professor for six consecutive years. Bontis was nominated in 2007 for the Ontario’s Best Lecturer Award 2008. TVO announced in February 2008 that Bontis was one of the top ten finalists. The OUSA (Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance), recognized Nick Bontis in 2008 as the best university professor in the province. According to the official award citation, “OUSA would like Dr. Nick Bontis to be recognized for his significant contributions to teaching excellence and for creating a positive learning environment for Ontario students.” Bontis received the 3M National Teaching Fellowship in 2009, an honor that is only given to the best university professors in Canada. He also won the OCUFA Teacher Award, which is awarded to the best professors in Ontario.
As a management consultant, Bontis advises organizational leaders on various strategic management issues. He is the Chief Data Scientist of Performitiv, a learning software organization. He is also on the Advisory Board of several organizations including a variety of educational-based institutions designing and implementing executive development programs across the country. He is on the Executive Board of Harvest Portfolios, an investment company based in Oakville, Ontario. He is a former member of the Board of Governors for Hillfield Strathallan College, an independent school located in Hamilton, Ontario. He is a former member of the Board of Governors for Canada’s 10 Most Admired Corporate Cultures program. He is Director of the Institute for Intellectual Capital Research, a management consulting firm that specializes in conducting human capital measurement diagnostics. In 2012, Bontis was elected as a member of the Board of Directors for the Canadian Soccer Association.

Bontis played competitive soccer since childhood, for various premier clubs in Ontario, including Scarborough Maple Leaf, Scarborough Azzurri and London City. He also played for Dundas United and Hamilton Greek Olympic. He plays for Proto Stars, H&DOSL and Schalke FC, H&D. He was a five-time Ontario Cup winner and represented Canada at a World Youth Cup tournament held in Bremen, Germany in 1986. He was a University of Western Ontario varsity soccer player who was an OUA all-star, leading scorer, and team MVP. Bontis was also awarded the Bronze W and Purple Blanket Awards as an outstanding dual-athlete at UWO. Bontis received a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration (Honors Business Administration), from Ivey Business School University of Western Ontario in 1992. He graduated from Ivey in 1999 with a Doctor of Philosophy (Business Administration).
