Ontong was considered to be eligible to represent England in international cricket as he had fulfilled the requirements.
After scoring 1121 runs at 48.73, and taking 64 wickets of 27.76, 1985 was his best season. He scored 130 runs and took figures of 5/39, 8/67 in a match against Nottinghamshire. He was the second Glamorgan cricketer who achieved the feat of scoring a century and taking 10 runs in a first-class match.

Born in Johannesburg, Ontong came from South Africa to seek a career in football. He had trials with Chelsea in early 1970s. After some success in club cricket in London, Ontong was not able to impress enough to be accepted into their ranks. The South African was offered a spot on the MCC groundstaff by Len Muncer, his coach. Later, Muncer recommended him to Glamorgan. Ontong made his Glamorgan debut in 1975 against the touring Australian team. He was a regular member of the Glamorgan side from 1977 and would return to South Africa after each British summer to play more top-class cricket.
He started his career as a right-arm medium-medium pace bowler. However, he switched to off-spin in 1983 and it quickly became his favorite craft. Ontong also moved up from the middle to the third position in the lower order. After Mike Selvey abruptly retired halfway through the 1984 season, Ontong was elected captain of Glamorgan. He finished the summer with a record 74 wickets. He also scored his highest first-class score of the season with an innings of 204 against Middlesex at Swansea.
In August 1988, Ontong was badly injured in a car accident when he was travelling from Essex to Northamptonshire. The damage to his knee ended his career at Glamorgan although in the early 1990s he appeared in some matches for Northern Transvaal, a team he would go on to coach. He has also served as the Director of Coaching at Gauteng.
