Wapshott returned in 1992 to The Times to turn the drab Saturday Review section into The Times Magazine. The magazine is published every Saturday. He was promoted to Saturday editor due to its popularity and sharp increase in Saturday sales. Additionally, he added several sections that were comparable to the Sunday papers. Wapshott is often credited with changing the Saturday newspaper market, as other papers followed his lead.
He was most recently the opinion editor at Newsweek and one of the quartet of senior editors who revived the title in 2014 after a year of non-publication. He has been a regular guest on CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, ABC and the Charlie Rose Show and contributed on American matters to The New Statesman. In 2008, he was invited by Tina Brown to help launch The Daily Beast and was appointed Senior Editor. In 2009 he became an adjunct professor at The New School, New York, teaching short biographies and profiles. The same year he became a consultant to Oprah Winfrey’s website Oprah.com. For a number of years he wrote a two columns a week for Thomson Reuters.
He became The Observer’s features editor in 1983 and started Section 5, a weekly color magazine. He succeeded Robert Harris in the role of political editor, and covered Margaret Thatcher’s final days as Conservative leader. He was the first person to report on John Major’s early life.

In 1973, Wapshott joined the Scotsman as a graduate student. He was based in Edinburgh. In 1976, Wapshott moved from Edinburgh to London to join The Times’ staff. There he worked first as a letter page editor in William Rees-Mogg’s Department, then as a features editor. During this time, he created a series long-form profiles of political and artistic figures. Nicholas Wapshott was the second son of Raymond (Olivia), Beryl Wapshott and was born in Dursley. He attended Dursley County Primary School and was awarded a Gloucester Foundation scholarship to Rendcomb College in Cirencester. In 2001, he was appointed North America Correspondent of The Times, based in New York. He arrived three weeks before the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001, but had returned briefly to London and was aboard the QE2 en route to New York when the Twin Towers fell. In 2005 he began writing business features and news stories for The Sunday Telegraph and the following year joined The New York Sun as national and foreign editor, writing a well regarded weekly political column.
