He was still in New York at Staten Island (since September 2017 on a sabbatical at Saint Christopher’s parish church) on 30 November 2017 when Pope Francis appointed him as the newest Bishop of Banjul. The announcement proved historic for he became the first Gambian national to lead the see and the first Gambian in general to be appointed as a bishop. Mendy received his episcopal consecration on 3 February 2018 in Bakau at the Independence Stadium from Archbishop Edward Tamba Charles.
At this point when he enrolled in his first Duquesne university in Pittsburgh where he received his degree from the department of philosophy in 1998. He continued his training with the Spiritans after that in the Spiritan International Theological School in Enugu located in Nigeria between 1993 and his ordination, which was held on November 15th, 1997 at Banjul. Mendy was ordained to a solemn profession as an Spiritan on the 31st of August, 1996, when he was still an ordained seminarian. From 1997 to 1998, Mendy was a pastor within both the Saint Peter and Saint Therese parishes, while also serving as an assistant at the Saint Martin of Porres parish in Freetown in Sierra Leone.

Gabriel Mendy (born 9 April 1967) is a Gambian Roman Catholic prelate and professed member of the Spiritans who is currently Archbishop of Banjul in the Gambia since his appointment on the 30th of November 2017. It is his first Gambian national to be elected to the diocese. He is also is the only Gambian to be elevated to the rank of bishop.
He graduated in 1985 at Saint Peter’s Technical and Senior School in Lamin before beginning an novitiate in the Spiritans and continued until 1987. He continued his studies in philosophy in Nsukka in Nigeria before his ordination . He was after that, he worked as a pastoralist at Kenema located in Sierra Leone from 1990 until 1991.
