He made a TV documentary entitled The Strangest Viking in 2003. It was part of Channel 4’s Secret History series. In it, Shaban explored the possibility Ivar the Boneless, the Viking chieftain, may have suffered from osteogenesis imperfecta. This is the same condition that he has. Shaban also published a trilogy on Kindle of Ivar The Boneless screenplays. This portrays the Viking chieftain with brittle bones and unable walk as a disabled Danish prince.

Shaban’s play The First To Go premièred in May 2008, produced by Edinburgh’s Benchtours Theatre Company in association with Sirius Pictures. It opened at the Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh on 23 May and toured to the Tron Theatre, Glasgow; the Byre Theatre, St Andrews and Lawrence Batley Theatre, Huddersfield.

His most memorable TV role was as the alien reptilian Sil in Doctor Who, a BBC science fiction television series. Shaban was Sil in two serials, Mindwarp (1986) and Vengeance On Varos (1985). He created Sil’s laughter. Philip Martin again wrote the roles of Shaban in the Big Finish audio dramas Mission to Magnus (2008) and Antidote to Oblivion (2013).

Shaban was born in Amman (Jordan). After being disabled from the brittle-bone disease osteogenesis imperfecta, he was sent to England to receive medical treatment. He grew up in several hospitals and residential homes. In the late 1970s, he studied at the University of Surrey and was a contributor to the Students Union newspaper “Bare Facts”. The university awarded Shaban an Honorary Doctorate in 1997 for his services to the promotion of Disability Arts.

Shaban was nominated Best Actor in Scottish theatre in 2005, by the Critics’ Awards for Theatre in Scotland (CATS), for his role as Mack the Knife in Bertolt Brecht’s Threepenny Opera, a Theatre Workshop (Edinburgh) production. Shaban lost out to rival nominee David Tennant, who was about to become the new Doctor Who.
