Her paternal grandfather, a Toronto rabbi and community leader who was descended from multiple generations of Hasidic Polish rabbis, is Kelman’s descendant. Rabbi Felix Levy, her maternal grandfather, received his ordination also from HUC. He helped to pass the 1937 Columbus Platform, which undid many anti-Zionist elements of the 1885 Pittsburgh Platform. Levi Weiman Kelman her brother is a rabbi and leads a congregation to Jerusalem.
Her husband, Dr. Elan, is an ex-pilot in the Israeli Air Force and specializes in Israeli relations in the Diaspora. As of 2017, they had two daughters, Leora (Daphna) and Mikey (Mikey). They also had 4 grandchildren. Leora Ezrachi Veered (full name Leora Ezrachi) was ordained in 2017 by the Hebrew Union College–Jewish Institute of Religion in Jerusalem as the 100th Israeli Reform Rabbi.
HUC President Rabbi Alfred Gottschalk supervised Kelman’s “historical and symbolic” ordination on the Jerusalem campus. This was Kelman’s first experience as Israel’s first female rabbi. Hebrew Union College appointed her to be the first female Dean at the HUC Jerusalem campus. She succeeded Dr. Michael Marmur. She wrote “Personal Reflection” (from a long line of Rabbis) which was published in 2016 in The Sacred Calling.

Naamah Kelly-Ezrachi, a US-born Rabbi, was named Dean of the Hebrew Union College -Jewish Institute of Religion in Jerusalem in July 2009. Kelman became the first woman to be ordained as a rabbinic priest in Israel in 1992 when she was given her rabbinic ordination by Rabbi Alfred Gottschalk.
She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Arts degree as a student. She moved to Israel in 1976 and earned a Master of Arts in Social Work at the Institute of Contemporary Jewry, Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Kelman was currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Ramat Gan at Bar-Ilan University. Her research focuses on “The Construction of Meaning For Young Israelis: Examining Non-Orthodox Marriages.”
