He represented the USSR in 1989 Haifa European Team Chess Championships, winning individual bronze and team gold medals. He was a Belgian player and had a great result at the Manila Chess Olympiad 1992. He scored 75% on board 1. He scored a respectable 58% in 2006 when he played top board for Turkey, his second adopted country, at the Turin Olympiad.
Mikhail Gurevich was also a long-time second to eventual world champion Vishwanathan Anand in the 1990s. He is known as an expert on the French Defence, the Reshevsky variation of the Nimzo-Indian Defence, and the Petrosian variation of the Queen’s Indian Defence. In 1991, he wrote a book on the latter, entitled Queen’s Indian Defence: Kasparov System, published by Batsford.
Mikhail Gurevich’s results in the late 1990s were not as impressive as in previous years, but he has since made a comeback. He had achieved his highest rating of 2694 on the January 2001 rating list, which ranked him 14th in the world. In 2001 he won the Belgian Chess Championship with a perfect 9/9 score.
Gurevich received the International Master title in 1985 and was made an International Grandmaster by 1986. He was the first person to reach Moscow in 1987, ahead of Sergey Dolmatov and Oleg Romanishin. After Rafael Vaganian, he finished second at Leningrad, but ahead Andrei Sokolov und Artur Yusupov.

Mikhail Gurevich, Russian: Mikhail Naumovich Gurevich, romanized as Mikhail Naumovich Gurevich; was born 22 February 1959 in Moscow) is a Soviet-born Belgian player of chess. From 1989 to 1991, he was one of the top ten most ranked players. Gurevich was made an International Grandmaster in 1986. He is also a senior trainer and FIDE arbitrator.
Gurevich won 1984 the Ukrainian Chess Championship and was elected 1985 USSR Champion. He controversially took the title from Viktor Gavrikov and Alexander Chernin on tiebreak points. This happened after a three-way playoff and all game results were drawn. However, he was not permitted to leave the country to take part in the Interzonal. Gavrikov, Chernin, and Chernin took his place.
At his peak, between 1989 and 1991, Gurevich was consistently ranked in the top ten players in the world. He took first at Reggio Emilia 1989, ahead of Vassily Ivanchuk, Jaan Ehlvest and Viswanathan Anand and tied for first at Moscow 1990 with Alexander Khalifman and Evgeny Bareev. His highest world ranking was a tie for fifth place on the January 1990 and January 1991 FIDE rating lists (with ratings of 2645 and 2650 respectively).
