Murder of Mallory Manning is one of the most popular and richest Event who was born on February 6, 1981 in Nelson, New Zealand. Manning was raised in a difficult home with a stepfather who was abusive and her father running amok. Manning was 14 when she began using drugs and went into foster care. Manning was a prostitute for 15 years. She was sentenced to 18 month imprisonment in 1999 for stabbing a shop clerk with a blood-filled needle during a robbery. Manning was behind bars for several times and also had a sister Jasmine who was involved in similar circles. Manning lost touch with Jasmine when she was placed under witness protection in 2008. Jasmine then committed suicide in July. Manning gave up prostitution and drugs because she was afraid she would die young just like her sister.
Police interviewed Manning and recorded vital information after speaking to another prostitute regarding the murder. The cardigan Manning was wearing contained seeds, which suggests that the murder may have occurred in many places. Police approached Manning’s former roommate to identify a voice he recognized as being from the “criminal underworld”. A man wearing a singlet and brown curly hair was also identified as an individual of interest. Two men stood by a 4WD vehicle, while the driver of a white saloon car were also located within metres of Manning’s location on the night she died.
On 29 March 2012, police arrested and charged 24-year-old, unemployed, Mauha Huatahi Fawcett with the murder and kidnap of Manning. The man was not associated with the semen sample found at the scene but was living in Christchurch at the time and was definitely associated with the crime scene. The man was a suspect early in the investigation but police went on to state; “From evidence gathered it is clear that a number of people have been involved in either the kidnapping or murder of Ms Manning. The inquiry is continuing to identify all persons who were responsible for her death, or were accessories after the fact, so that they can be brought to justice.” The family of Manning was pleased, with her brother stating; “It’s great news. I definitely wasn’t expecting it. I thought it might take a bit longer. It’s been well over three years (of waiting).”
Fawcett’s trial began in the High Court in February 2014 and was expected to last 6 weeks. Fawcett carried out his own defense and claimed police had coerced him into making a confession. In March 2014, a jury of 6 men and 6 women found Fawcett guilty of murdering Manning. In May, Fawcett was sentenced life imprisonment with possibility of parole after 20 years. Police acknowledged that Fawcett’s sentencing was not the end of the investigation as other gang members were involved in Manning’s death. A person of interest labelled “Male B” has not yet been identified but is likely connected to Fawcett and the murder.

Manning was on Blenheim Road, walking along the 18th December 2008. A client picked her up at 9:17pm. She was dropped at her usual spot on Manchester and Peterborough Streets in Christchurch. At 9:30, she was picked up from the same area again and taken back to her home. Manning had another client, which lasted until 10 o’clock in the evening. Mauha Huatahi Fawacett, a 21 year-old unemployed man who went under the gang name “Muck Dog”, was then able to pick her up at 10:35 or 10.40. Fawcett hadn’t been granted entry to the Mongrel Mob Gang and was ordered to kill Manning to pay off her debts. Fawcett forced Manning to get in the car after showing her a threat text from another member of the gang. Manning sent a message to Fawcett at 10:43. She was then driven to Galbraith Avenue, Avonside. It would have taken approximately 10 minutes. Fawcett was given the order to stab Manning, but he backed out. Before loud music turned on, she was strangled, beat with a pole and stabbed. Gang members also “barked like dogs” while giving Nazi salutes. Fawcett threw Manning’s body into the Avon River, where she later died.
Manning was clean from drug use and went to a polytechnic to study art. Manning and her partner wanted to have children and start a family. Manning was poor and unemployed, making it difficult for Manning to buy Christmas gifts for her family. She decided to go back to prostitution “just one night.” The Mongrel Mob began to take control of central Christchurch’s sex workers in 2008, demanding 20 dollars tax for each job they “owned”. Manning developed bad relationships with the gang as a result of not paying street worker taxes or drug debts. Manning also relapsed after being back on the streets. She took methadone and morphine as well as diazepam and possibly temazepam in the hours and days before her death.
In December 2010 it was announced that the location where Manning was murdered had been identified due to the seeds found on her body; it was close to where the body had been dumped in a property on Galbraith Avenue in Avonside. A warehouse at the site was a Mongrel Mob hangout at the time and they were known to work prostitutes; however it was not ruled out that the property could have been accessed by others as well. In September 2011 it was announced police had discovered semen on Manning’s body that was not matched to any of her partners that night. Despite the fact she was possibly sexually assaulted, the police did not rule out the possibility Manning had an unknown sexual partner or client. It was announced they were focusing the investigation on gang members as a result of the discovery of her death site.
