In April of 2018, Nakasone was unanimously confirmed by the United States Senate as Director of the National Security Agency and head of the United States Cyber Command. He was also elevated into the ranks of General.

Prior to his promotion to lieutenant general in 2016, Nakasone was the Deputy Commanding General of United States Cyber Command and then commander of the Cyber National Mission Force at Cyber Command. Nakasone was twice an officer on staff for the Joint Chiefs of Staff and was Director of Intelligence J2 of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan. On the 14th of October the 14th of October, 2016, he assumed charge of both the United States Second Army and United States Army Cyber Command. Nakasone was also appointed the head of the United Cyber Command’s Joint Task Force-ARES. which was a task force that was designed to coordinate electronic counter-terrorism activities in the fight against Islamic State. He was head of the Second Army until it was removed for the fourth occasion in the history of its organization on March 31st, 2017, and continued to be the head of United States Army Cyber Command until his appointment as NSA Director.
