Monica Helms is one of the most popular and richest Transgender Activist who was born on March 8, 1951 in Sumter, South Carolina, United States. Monica F. Helms, born 8 March 1951, is a transgender activist and author. She is also a veteran of the United States Navy. She is also the creator of Transgender Pride Flag.

She has lobbied state legislators in Arizona, Georgia, and Congress on Capitol Hill. When she was elected as a delegates to the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston (Massachusetts), she made history. She was the first transgender person to be elected to the DNC Convention in Boston, Massachusetts.

Helms created the Transgender Pride Flag in 1999, and it was first flown at a Pride Parade in Phoenix, Arizona, in 2000. Helms donated the original Transgender Pride Flag at the first ceremony honoring the addition of a collection of LGBT historical items at the Smithsonian on August 19, 2014.

In June 2019, to mark the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, an event widely considered a watershed moment in the modern LGBTQ rights movement, Queerty named her one of the Pride50 “trailblazing individuals who actively ensure society remains moving towards equality, acceptance and dignity for all queer people”.

Helms holds a General AA Degree from Glendale Community College (Arizona), and an AA degree in Industrial Television. He graduated from Chattahoochee Tech College 2018 with an Associate Degree in Television Production Technology.

Helms served from 1970 to 1978 in the US Navy and was assigned to two sub- marines, USS Francis Scott Key (1972-1976), and USS Flasher (76-1978). Helms, who was stationed in Charleston, South Carolina, during her Navy service, began dressing up as a woman and said that it was the “deepest, most darkest secret she had ever known in [her] life.” In 1976, she was transferred to the Bay Area and stated that it felt like “she” could be as out in public as herself.”

Helms, who had left the Navy in 1978, joined the United States Submarine Veterans, Inc. chapter in her hometown in 1996. Helms made the transition and reapplied to the Phoenix chapter in 1998. Helms received a lot of backlash, even being called a generic veteran’s organization for women, rather than the submarine-specific group. After a few months, Helms prevailed and claimed to be the first woman ever to join the organization.

Helms founded the Transgender American Veterans Association (TAVA) in 2003, and remained president until 2013. On May 1, 2004, TAVA sponsored the first ever Transgender Veterans March to the Wall. Fifty trans veterans arrived in DC and visited the Vietnam Memorial to honor people they knew whose names are on The Wall. They also made history when they became the first openly transgender people to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns. They did it again in 2005. Helms continues to advocate for transgender service members and veterans, as the end of the prolific Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy of the United States military did not change the status of transgender military personnel.
