Miroslav Zajonc is one of the most popular and richest Luger who was born on June 10, 1960 in Spišská Stará Ves, Prešov Region, Slovakia. Zajonc was born in Czechoslovakia on June 10, 1960 at Spisska Staraves. He was raised in Stary Smokovec, Slovakia’s Tatra Mountains. To aid in pronunciation, he changed his surname spelling to Zayonc in 1995. In 1996, he became an American citizen.

Zajonc did his best, but he was not able to compete in the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo. This was due to the fact that he didn’t have US citizenship. He represented the United States after 1985 and was included in the U.S. Olympic team for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. He was able to qualify despite having broken his right foot in training accidents five weeks before the Olympics. After hitting his foot against a 65 mph 2×6 wall extension, Zajonc sustained an open fracture. He was also missing part of the heal bone. He was unable to compete in singles, and instead finished 11th in the US men’s doubles competition. To get to the start, he used crutches. Zayonc was asked by the East German team to examine his injury. They thought he might be trying to fake it in order to gain competitive advantage with the pointed cast. In 1988, he retired from competition.

In May 2017, Zajonc stepped down as head coach, due to Parkinson’s disease. USA Luge CEO Jim Leahy stated that Zayonc would remain active in the organization.

Zajonc was allowed by Canada to compete in the 1983 World Championships. He defeated Sergey Danilin (Soviet Union), Olympic champ Paul Hildgartner, Italy (Italy), as well as 1980 Olympic champion Bernhard Glass (Germany). Even though Zajonc did not have the support of the dominant German, Italian and Soviet teams, Hansjorg Raffl, an Italian luger, gave him one his speed suits to make him more competitive with the best. The Soviet coaching staff had to deal with his victory as Danilin won on a Soviet-built sled that he purchased months before the race.

Miroslav Zajonc, also known as Zayonc, is a Slovak-born luger. He competed for Czechoslovakia (born June 10, 1960), Canada (born June 10, 1960), and the United States. He competed for Canada and won the gold medal at the 1983 FIL World Luge Championships, Lake Placid, New York. This was in four records breaking runs. He represented the United States at 1988 Winter Olympics.

Zajonc began training in luge around 1971. He competed for Czechoslovakia up to his departure to the United States in 1982. Due to U.S. citizenship qualification policies, Zajonc was not able to compete for the U.S. in luge until 1985.

Zajonc joined the USA luge team’s coaching staff in 1990. He served as head coach of the junior national team from 1991-2011. His athletes won 15 World Championship titles and many overall World Cup victories. He also coached the US Olympic luge teams in 1992, 1994, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014, winning five Olympic medals. In September 2012, Zayonc was named U.S. senior national head coach heading for Sochi. At the Olympics, Erin Hamlin won a bronze medal, the first-ever US Olympic medal in singles luge.
