Marvin Andre Hargrove (born April 23rd in 1968) is an ex- professional American footballer who was a in the wide receiver position for the Philadelphia Eagles in 1990. In the event of not being selected at the time of selection, Hargrove received a position after appealing personally to the coach of the team. The first NFL game Hargrove scored the sole touchdown in his entire career. He only played six more games before being cut from the team, thereby ending the NFL career.

Hargrove was born living in Willingboro Township, New Jersey and was a student at Willingboro High School. He was the son of a bus driver who was a long-time supporter of the Eagles and also a season ticket owner. In High school, Hargrove was a star player. After graduation, he went to the University of Richmond on a football scholarship. Although he was a good player at Richmond however, it was a small one that did not have the capacity to compete with the bigger rivals. Additionally, the Richmond offense was slowed in his senior year in the same year, and the player was forced to miss due to injuries. Due to his injury, his 40-yard sprint time before the NFL recruiter was much longer than anticipated. This, along with his size in comparison to professional football, led to his not being selected to be selected for 1990’s NFL draft.

Marvin Hargrove was a rare example of a player who was not drafted who showed up to training camp, and was picked to join one of the NFL team. Although other college players were deciding to quit football, Hargrove continued to keep an agent and showed up at Philadelphia Eagles training camp in June 1990. When he first joined the crowd, Hargrove took the opportunity to ask the coach Buddy Ryan for a chance. Ryan allowed Hargrove complete a 40-yard sprint that he finished in an impressive 4.5 seconds. Ryan then took Hargrove to the office of the team to sign an agreement in case Hargrove was selected to join the team. The contract however did not state that whether he would be selected as a player, and Hargrove was aware that this was unlikely.

Hargrove was a part of six additional games during the season of 1990. Hargrove’s performance was average, but not exceptional until his final game. Hargrove was astonished by the results. Hargrove was also a popular choice of teammates and fans alike. This led to Ryan selected Hargrove to be on the team that would play in the opening during a preseason game played in 1990. When other free agents were made their debut, Hargrove got dropped off the team, however Ryan suggested that he keep his eyes open for a phone call. As other players fell victim to injury, Hargrove was reinstated as an alternate receiver and punt returner. In the game against the Cardinals Hargrove received an interception by the quarterback Randall Cunningham, who decided at the midpoint of play to pass to Hargrove. Hargrove later ran it 34 yards for his only touchdown.
