Wolfgang Linger Biography
Birthday | Nov 4 |
Birth Year | 1982 |
Wolfgang Linger is one of the most popular and richest Luger who was born on November 4, 1982 in Hall in Tirol, Tyrol, Austria. Wolfgang was just nine year old at the time he attempted an artificial luge track the first time. It was an old track used in Olympic races in the years 1964 and 1976. His brother was among the few members of the local luge group who had tried it. A few years later when they were both 14years old, they were able to play doubles luge for their first attempt. While they both competed as singles or as mixed doubles in certain events, Wolfgang Andreas and Wolfgang Andreas have had their greatest successes as a team of doubles.
Just one year after his accident and with pins of metal placed in his left leg Linger as well as his twin brother, were chosen to participate in their 2nd Winter Olympics, the 2006 Games in Turin, Italy. The doubles event in Turin saw crashes from three teams and one caused one Ukrainian participant being transported to the hospital in an ambulance. The event was described by the media as’stricken with crashes. The Lingers were able to take home the gold medal by beating the 2002 champions, who were defending their title. Andre Florschutz and Torsten Wustlich from Germany.
The Linger brothers were unable to make it a hat-trick of golds at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, finishing second to the German duo of Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt, whose lead of .522 seconds over the Lingers was the largest winning margin in the history of the Olympic doubles competition. However the silver medal made them the second most successful pairing in Olympic doubles luge, behind Stefan Krauße and Jan Behrendt. Less than six weeks later the Linger brothers announced their retirement from the sport.
Linger suffered injuries when his brother and he fell off the track during an Olympic test run in the year 2005. The track was known for its speed and the crash happened on the 17th turn of 19. He broke his ankle and fractured the fibula of his leg as well as metal pins put in to aid in healing. Even so, he said to reporters that although he did find the track to be difficult, he loved the challenge of lugging it around.

Wolfgang Linger (born 4 November 1982 in Tirol Hall of Tirol) was an Austrian retired luger who competes internationally since the year 2000. When he was a child Linger and his elder brother Andreas were able to learn to luge on an old Olympic track for luge, and at the age of 14 began playing as a team of two in the very first instance. Linger has earned five gold medals during the FIL World Luge Championships. He has 3 golds (Men’s doubles 2003, 2011, as well as 2012) as well as two bronze medals (Mixed team Men’s Doubles: 2003 and Mixed Team 2013). He also won seven golds during the FIL European Luge Championships, including the gold (Men’s doubles 2010) as well as 3 silvers (Men’s doubles 2008 Mixed team 2008, 2010,) along with three bronze medals (Men’s doubles 2004 and 2014 Mixed team 2004). The Lingers were the overall Luge World Cup men’s doubles champions in 2011-12 , and had fifteen World Cup race victories. In 2005 the team suffered a leg injury in a crash. However, following year, during the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy took home victory in the doubles Luge. The same feat was repeated in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada, defeating another pair of brothers, Andris and Juris Sics from Latvia.
The Linger brothers were 8th at their 8th place finish at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. Their times were pretty constant, with 43.330 seconds, and 43.354 seconds, yet they still fell behind their compatriots Tobias Schiegl and Markus. In the next season however they were able to challenge the Schiegls. Lingers took on their fellow Schiegls as the most successful doubles team in Austria and beat them at the very first Krombacher Challenge Cup and setting the course record in that event.
The Linger brothers entered the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada defending their 2006 gold medal and as strong favorites to be medal contenders. Controversy surrounded the luge competitions at the 2010 Games following the death of Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili in a crash during a training run prior to the opening of the Games. After Kumaritashvili’s death, changes were made in the ice profile of the turn where he crashed, padding was added to support columns like the one he hit, and the start of the doubles competition was moved up to what had previously been the junior start. This meant that competitors only had six training runs on the altered course in which to develop an entirely new strategy for their runs. After the first run, the Linger brothers led their closest competitors, brothers Andris and Juris Šics of Latvia, by a razor-thin margin of .088 seconds. However, they expanded their lead in the second run, winning the gold medal by a cumulative .264 seconds. Their victory prevented the German team at the Games from sweeping all three luge medals, as German competitors had previously won both the men’s and women’s singles events.
