Smrek was interested in signing with the NBA’s defending champion Boston Celtics, but he decided to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers. Smrek viewed the Lakers as the best option for him to play a regular NBA role, since their starting center Kareem AbdulJabbar was nearing 40. Smrek was a sparing player in his two seasons with Lakers but earned NBA championship rings for 1987 and 1988. Six games were required to win the first title against the rival Celtics. After that, he spent a year with San Antonio Spurs and parts of three seasons playing for the Golden State Warriors. He also played briefly with the Los Angeles Clippers. He also played in the 1996 preseason for the Toronto Raptors (but not in regular-season games).
