Michael Frank Smrek, a former Canadian professional basketball player, was born August 31, 1962. The Portland Trail Blazers selected him in the second round in 1985 NBA draft. Smrek was interested in signing with the NBA’s defending champion Boston Celtics, but he decided to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers. Smrek viewed the Lakers as the best option for him to play a regular NBA role, since their starting center Kareem AbdulJabbar was nearing 40. Smrek was a sparing player in his two seasons with Lakers but earned NBA championship rings for 1987 and 1988. Six games were required to win the first title against the rival Celtics. After that, he spent a year with San Antonio Spurs and parts of three seasons playing for the Golden State Warriors.
