The mother of his son, Anna Reijnenberg, was a piano instructor of Dutch-Betawi ancestry. He began to study music when he was five years old, beginning with classical piano. He then began studying blues.
In 2001, Fariz was one of the notable individuals who were questioned by Jakarta Police and questioned for their alleged connections to the Aceh Referendum Information Center (SIRA) and also questioned about the attack on one of the Acehnese hostel in Setiabudi in the month of May that year. Based on the documents they discovered, the police suspect that Fariz was a spokesman for the attackers by referring to a letter that which he wrote an email to Tengku Abdullah Syafiie who was the head in the Free Aceh Movement, expressing sympathies and friendship with the separatist group’s cause. In 2009, Rolling Stone Indonesia listed 3 of Fariz’s solo songs as the best Indonesian songs of all time, with “Sakura” placing 9th, “Barcelona” 23rd, and “Selangkah ke Seberang” 121st. Another of Fariz’s compositions, “Hasrat dan Cinta” (Desire and Love), covered by Andi Meriem Matalatta, placed 103rd. and “Interlokal” which Fariz played with his band Symphony in 94th.
In 2009, Fariz wrote and published Living in Harmony, a book on his life and influences, with Budianto Shambazy and Salomo Simanungkalit as editors. It outlined 60 events in his life and how they influenced him.
In 1979, Fariz released his first album Selangkah ke Seberang. The next calendar year Fariz came out with Sakura which is the Japanese word meaning Cherry blossoms. This album has made him famous. In the decade of the 80s Fariz had been known as a “poster boy” often appearing in magazines for teens.

Fariz Rustam Munaf also known by the name Fariz RM (born Jakarta, 5 January 1959) is an Indonesian musician and audio-visual artist. In 1977, when he began his career the artist has released 19 albums as a solo artist as well as three collaborations with other artists. The most well-known of these is his hit songs “Barcelona” and “Sakura” (Cherry Blossom). A trio of three of his own tracks were featured in Rolling Stone’s 2009 list of “The 150 Best Indonesian Songs of All Time”, and another of his compositions were was also included.
It was 1977 when Fariz participated in The Prambors FM Song Writing Contest for adolescents, getting into the top 10 in the competition. The is the year he also played the drums for his album, Badai Pasti Berlalu and it was at this point the album that Chrisye offered him the name Fariz RM Fariz RM, which Fariz used for stage names since “Chrisye thought it sounded nice.”
Fariz was arrested for marijuana possession in 2007; he was sentenced to eight months in prison and rehab.
