Michael Thomas O’Connell, born November 25, 1955, is the Director for Pro Development at the Los Angeles Kings. O’Connell was also an ex- professional ice hockey player, and later served as general manager of the Boston Bruins. O’Connell played 860 regular season National Hockey League (NHL), games from 1977 to 1990, and was later the general manager for the Boston Bruins between 2000 and 2006. He is the son and brother of former quarterback of the National Football League (NFL), Tommy O’Connell, and former player of World Hockey Association (WHA).
Under his leadership, the Bruins placed first in the Northeast Division, second overall in Eastern Conference, and fourth overall in NHL with 104 points in 2003-04 season. For the 2004-05 season, the NHL locked out its players and the Bruins lost five of the players O’Connell had acquired (Michael Nylander and Brian Rolston), to free agency. O’Connell attributed the decision not to resign the free agents to Jeremy Jacobs, the owner of the Bruins.
Many important players on the Bruins roster were drafted during O’Connell’s tenure as general manager, including Patrice Bergeron and David Krejčí, centerpieces of the team’s Stanley Cup victory in 2011.
O’Connell is currently the director of professional player development with the Los Angeles Kings. In this role he has won 2 Stanley Cups in 2012 and 2014.
O’Connell was a retired player who served as the head coach for the San Diego Gulls in the International Hockey League (IHL). O’Connell also served as the IHL’s head coach from 1990 to 1991. O’Connell was born in Cohasset in Massachusetts and played gridiron football and hockey at Archbishop Williams High School, Braintree. As a teenager, he moved to Kingston Canadians of the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League on the recommendation Harry Sinden. He was quickly named the best OMJHL defenseman in 1974-75.
The Chicago Black Hawks selected O’Connell in the 43rd round of the 1975 NHL Entry Draft. O’Connell began his professional hockey career in the minors, with the Central Professional Hockey League’s Dallas Black Hawks from 1976-1977. In 1978, he became the first Chicagoan to play for the Black Hawks. However, his entire career was spent with the Boston Bruins in Massachusetts, his adopted state. He was acquired in a trade for Al Secord, 1980. O’Connell was an excellent skater and was also a solid player all around. He was reliable in the defensive zone but effective on offense with hard shots from the point. O’Connell spent his best years in Boston where he was part of a defense team that included Ray Bourque and Brad Park. While with the Bruins in 1984, he played in the NHL All-Star Game. He also represented the United States at both the 1985 Ice Hockey World Championship tournaments and the 1981 Canada Cup. O’Connell ended his NHL career in 1989 as a defensive specialist and penalty killer with the Detroit Red Wings. He had been acquired in a trade for Reed Larson, in 1986. During his time with the Red Wings, he also served as an alternate captain.
In 2005, O’Connell traded Bruins star center Joe Thornton to the San Jose Sharks, receiving Brad Stuart, Marco Sturm and Wayne Primeau in exchange. Thornton would ultimately win the Hart Memorial Trophy as the League’s most valuable player and the Art Ross Trophy as scoring champion at the conclusion of the 2005–06 season.
