Matheson was a young player in the 2006 and 2007, Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournaments. He also played with a West Island minor ice hockey team. Matheson was named team captain for the 2014-15 season after signing an entry- level deal with the Panthers. He also gave up his senior year of NCAA eligibility and was sent to play for the San Antonio Rampage, an affiliate of the American Hockey League (AHL).
