Hallett reached the quarter-finals twice at the World Championship, but never advanced further. In 2004-05, Hallett’s final season on the main tour. Hallett was a solid player in snooker, but never made it to the top. His world ranking peaked at six in 1989-1990 after he won the 1975 national under-16 title. This was following his 1989 Hong Kong Open victory, in which he defeated Dene O’Kane, 9-8.
He defeated John Parrott in the semi-finals of the 1988 Benson & Hedges Masters and won the decider 6-5. He lost the final 9-0 to Steve Davis, which was the only whitewash in Masters final.

At the start of the 2011/12 season Hallett entered the Players Tour Championship and after winning his first two matches against Duane Jones 4-3 and Elliot Slessor also 4–3, he played Ronnie O’Sullivan and managed to take two frames in losing 4–2.
