In April of 2016, Paul and Gary O’Donovan were awarded silver medals at the double sculls of lightweight in the very first World Rowing Cup events of the year in Varese, Italy. The following month, the duo took home their gold medal in the European Rowing Championships gold medal in the double sculls event in Brandenburg, Germany.
At the 2018 European Championships in Glasgow, the O’Donovan brothers won silver in the lightweight double sculls, and later became world champions in the same event at the 2018 World Rowing Championships.
In August 2016 , at the Rio Olympics at Rio, the O’Donovan brothers were awarded silver in the second place behind France in the lightweight double sculls. It was the first rowing gold medal won by Ireland at the Olympics.

Gary O’Donovan (born 30 December 1992) is an Irish rower. Along with his brother Paul O’Donovan, he took home an Olympic gold medal for the lightweight double sculls in the 2016 European Rowing Championships, silver in the same discipline at the 2016 Summer Olympics with gold medals at the 2018 World Rowing Championships. He was the flag-bearer for Ireland in the closing ceremonies of the 2015 Summer Olympics.
Gary as well as his brother Paul started rowing in 2001 when Paul was just eight years old. The father of Gary, also a rower was a rower, took his two siblings to Skibbereen Rowing Club where he was a coach in the sport. They were picked to be part of their Irish junior team for the Home International Regatta which was held within Wales in 2008. They were awarded gold medals for the quadsculls juniors.
In 2017, the brothers won silver in men’s lightweight double sculls at the European Rowing Championships in May 2017. They also won silver at the second World Rowing Cup regatta of the season in Poland in June, and bronze at the third in July.
