Michael “Mike” Vernace, a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman, was born May 26, 1986. He is currently an unrestricted-free agent. He previously played with the Tampa Bay Lightning and Colorado Avalanche in the National Hockey League.

Vernace, a free agent after not being offered a contract by the Avalanche signed a one year deal with Atlanta Thrashers July 30, 2009. Vernace was assigned by the Chicago Wolves to Vernace, an AHL affiliate, on September 26, 2009. Vernace was then assigned to the Hamilton Bulldogs, where he played 47 games. To help the Bulldogs reach finals of the Western Conference, he recorded 4 assists in 18 games post-season.

Unable to come to terms with San Jose, Vernace signed as a free agent with the Tampa Bay Lightning on July 29, 2010, to a one-year, two-way contract.

On June 23, 2010, Vernace was traded by the Thrashers, along with Brett Sterling and a 7th round selection in 2010 NHL Entry Draft, back to the Sharks for future considerations in order to help the Thrashers facilitate an earlier trade of Dustin Byfuglien from the Chicago Blackhawks.

Vernace was traded to the Sharks by the Colorado Avalanche on June 1, 2006 for a 6th-round drafts pick. He was then signed to an entry-level contract. Vernace made his professional debut in 2006 with the Arizona Sundogs, CHL. He then joined the Albany River Rats, AHL affiliate, during the 2006-07 season.

Vernace was born in Toronto, Ontario. He played minor hockey most of his life in the Greater Toronto Hockey League. Vernace finished his minor hockey career with the 2001–02 Mississauga Reps Bantams. Vernace was selected in the 9th round (163rd overall), of the 2001 OHL Priority Selection.

Vernace was selected 201st by the San Jose Sharks as the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. He was drafted from the Brampton Battalion, Ontario Hockey League. For his high school education, he attended Chaminade College School.

Vernace joined new Avalanche affiliate, the Lake Erie Monsters, for their inaugural season in the 2007–08 season, leading the Monsters in games played with 79. After spending the majority of the 2008–09 season with the Monsters, Vernace received his first NHL call-up on March 16, 2009. He made his NHL debut with the Avalanche in a 3-2 shootout loss to the Minnesota Wild on March 17, 2009.
