Michael Matheus is one of the most popular and richest Medievalist who was born on March 27, 1953 in Graach an der Mosel, Rhineland- Palatinate, Germany. In 1953, he was born in Graach (Mosel). After receiving his university entrance qualification from the Friedrich Wilhelm High School, Trier, Matheus studied History, Political Science and German at the Universities of Bonn, Trier, and Munster. Matheus was a research associate at Trier University’s Department of Medieval History after passing the state exam and finishing his doctorate (1981). He was a recipient of a scholarship from both the German Research Foundation in Rome (DFG), and the German Historical Institute Rome (GII).
The German publishing house Schnell & Steiner published a Festschrift in German for Michael Matheus. It described his life and honored his contributions to the history sciences.
He was first chairman and director of the Institute of Historical Regional Studies, Mainz University. He was the Director of the German Historical Institute (Rome) from 2002 to 2012. Professor Matheus is a director of the Roman Institute of the Gorres Society since 2011. From 2012 to 2018, he was again a professor at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and Director of the Medieval, Early Modern History and Comparative Regional History sections. He was elected President of the German Study Center at Venice (Deutsches Studienzentrum, Venedig) in 2013.
