Joe F. Edwards Jr. is one of the most popular and richest American astronaut who was born on February 3, 1958 in Richmond, Virginia, United States. Edwards was born on 3 February 1958 at Richmond, Virginia, but believes that he has both Lineville as well as Roanoke Alabama as his home towns. The graduate was a graduate of Lineville High School in 1976 and was awarded the Master of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from the United States Naval Academy in the year 1980. The year 1994 was the time he was awarded the master of Science degree in Aviation Systems from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
On the 13th of November, 1991, while working as maintenance officer for VF-142, He was flying over the Persian Gulf at Mach 0.9 at 29,000 feet (8,800 meters) at the time that the radome broke away from the aircraft, hit the canopy and destroyed it. With a blinded eye collapsed lung and broken arm, and without communication or flight instruments and a broken arm, he retrieved the “convertible” Tomcat with his Radar Intercept Officer, LCDR Scott Grundmeier who was hunkered down on the back of the cabin. They was able to land on the airship carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower. He was given the Distinguished Flying Cross for this exceptional display of airmanship in extreme circumstances.
Selected as an astronaut by NASA in December 1994, Edwards reported to the Johnson Space Center in March 1995. He worked on technical issues for the Space Shuttle and International Space Station in the Safety Department of the Astronaut Office. He also served as Technical Assistant to the Director, Flight Crew Operations Directorate, NASA Director of Operations (DOR), Russia, and Astronaut CAPCOM representative in Mission Control for Shuttle ascent and entry.
Edwards retired from NASA and the U.S. Navy on April 30, 2000. He is currently involved with several companies around the country in the areas of technology, aviation, and business development.
The graduate graduated from Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN) in 1984. He then graduated from the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School in 1986. He was later a the project flight test officer in addition to piloting for F-14A (PLUS) along with F-14D Full Scale Development. He was the pilot for his initial Navy test flight for the F-14D, as well as an angle of attack/departure that was high from the controlled flight test programme for F-14 aircraft frame and F110 engine integration. He was the Maintenance and Operations Officer for Fighter Squadron 142 (VF-142) from 1989 until 1992. He was Operations Officer for the Operations Directorate of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Washington, D.C. from 1992 until 1994.

Joe Frank Edwards Jr. (born February 3, 1958), (Cmdr, USN, Ret. ) Joe Frank Edwards Jr. is an American aerospace engineer and an ex-aviator and naval officer as well as a test pilot. He is also a NASA astronaut.
Edwards was named to be a Naval Aviator in February 1982. The unit he was in was Fighter Squadron 143 (VF-143) in 1983, following having completed F-14 Tomcat training, and was a pilot on fighter escort and reconnaissance operations over Lebanon in 1983.
