Dr. Crooke and fellow University of Oregon faculty member Dr. Michael V. Russo won first prize in the corporate sustainability track in the 2016 Oikos International case competition for their case study, “Guayakí: Securing Supplies, Strengthening the Mission.” The case reviews the rise of Guayakí (company), a company that sells energy drinks produced with leaves from Yerba Mate trees.
Dr. Crooke is a regular author on articles regarding the subject of business strategy and has been featured in publications by the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Crooke has published several peer-reviewed articles including “Clover Food Lab: Sustainability as Competitive Advantage” (co-authored with Mark Chun and Amanda Kastelic), “Leadership in a Complex World: How to Manage ‘The Tragedy of Choice’” (co-authored with Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and Robert Bikel), “Creating Advocates: A Values-Oriented Approach to Developing Brand Loyalty” (co-authored with Craig Wilson) connecting Values and Purpose to customer acquisition and retention, “Personal Responsibility for Improving Society: The Role of Graduate Education” (with Mark Mallinger), and “Households’ Willingness to Pay for “Green” Goods: Evidence from Patagonia’s Introduction of Organic Cotton Sportswear” (with Casadesus-Masanell et al.). Additionally, he has authored an article about MBA programs fostering sustainable entrepreneurship for GreenBiz.com, and wrote the foreword to the book, Management Reset: Organizing for Sustainable Effectiveness by Edward E. Michael W. Crooke was born in Eugene, Oregon. He graduated from Aloha High School in 1975. After graduating from the BUD/S (Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL/SEAL) class, Crooke was a Navy SEAL with Underwater Demolition Team 12 (12 (UDT12), for four years. According to business publications, Crooke’s experience with the SEALs was a foundational part of his style as a business leader.
Crooke was appointed CEO of Pearl Izumi, in 1998, after he held leadership positions at Yakima Racks and Moonstone outdoor equipment/apparel businesses, as well as serving in the role of President of Kelty Packs 1995. Yvon Chouinard, founder of Pearl Izumi, recruited Crooke to become CEO of Lost Arrow Corporation, and Patagonia, Inc., where he increased employee engagement, and enriched the brand so that it rose to the top of many “Best Companies To Work For” lists. Crooke left Patagonia to become CEO of Revolution Living, backed by Steve Case, AOL founder. Here he managed Revolution’s portfolio companies Miraval Resorts and Flexcar, which were now merged with Zipcar. He also oversees other sustainable and responsible holdings. Crooke was appointed CEO of prAna Life in 2008. Crooke was previously a director of The Nantucket Project’s board of directors. Dr. Crooke is a frequent keynote speaker at conferences, companies, universities, including Opportunity Green, Harvard University and Stanford University.
