She races in non-drafting long distance triathlon events. She was third at the 2011 ITU Long Distance Triathlon World Championships. She has also won many Ironman and half Ironman distance races both as an amateur and professional. USA Triathlon named her the 2014 Non- Drafting Athlete Of The Year.

Kessler, a driver of her car, struck a pedestrian in March 2013. She “briefly stopped to check on the victim… then returned to her car and drove away.” She was arrested for felony hit and run in August 2013. Later, the charges were reduced to misdemeanor hits-and-run. Kessler entered an open plea agreement and admitted to hitting the plaintiff. The sentence consisted of 90 days in jail, three years probation and restitution. Kessler and pedestrian also reached a settlement in civil court in March 2015. According to the attorney for the pedestrian, the final settlement was $300,000.

Kessler was the daughter of Keith and Debbie Keeran. She was raised in Columbus, OH. She was an athlete in four sports growing up, including swimming, field hockey, track and lacrosse, as well as attending Columbus Academy. After high school, she went to Syracuse University on an athletic scholarship for Division I. She participated in track and field hockey. In 2000, she graduated with a degree and certificate in nutrition and hospitality management. She then took a job at Half Moon Bay’s Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company as a manager. She also bought a triathlon bike using her graduation money, and began Ironman racing. Later, she worked 60 hours per semaine in investment banking at RBC Capital Markets while still training 15-18 hours per week.

Kessler was an amateur who completed four Ironman races per year with a very loose training program. Matt Dixon was her coach in 2007 as she wanted more structure to her training. She quit her job at RBC to make the transition to professional triathlon in 2009. She placed 7th in Ironman Arizona, her first race as an Ironman pro. In her first year of pro racing, she would finish 7th at Ironman Arizona. She also won Ironman Canada 2010. In 2011, Kessler was diagnosed with hyponatremia, hypernatremia, and nutritional problems at her first two races at Ironman St. George. She took first place at Rev3 Portland and then finished third at the ITU Long Distance World Championships Henderson, NV. Finally, she completed the year with her fastest Ironman time, breaking the nine-hour barrier at Ironman Arizona.

Following her 9th Ironman race win at Ironman Arizona in November 2015, Kessler and coach Matt Dixon mutually parted with Dixon expressing admiration and respect for her.
