Mercy Akide is one of the most popular and richest Association Football Player who was born on August 26, 1975 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. Mercy Akide Udoh, born 26 August 1975 in Port Harcourt Nigeria, is a former Nigerian footballer.

She represented Nigeria in three FIFA Women’s World Cups. She also helped Nigeria’s Super Falcons win three African Women Championships titles (AWC), in 2000, 2002 and 1998. She married Colin Udoh, a football journalist, in Port Harcourt in November 2004.

Between 2006–2008, Mercy was employed at Stars Soccer Club, where she was the head coach for Stars U-16 Athena C Gold Girls and worked within Youth Development (an NGO also employing her friend Luke Concannon, a coach of the U-13 girls team.) From 2008–2013, Mercy worked as the co-director of Youth Development and for Beach FC in Virginia Beach, Virginia. In 2013, Mercy joined the coaching staff of Virginia Rush Soccer Club, in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

After returning from 1995 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, Akide, now known as Marvelous, pitched tent with Ufuoma Babes of Warri, who had won both the league and Cup twice the previous two seasons. It would prove to be a rewarding decision. Ufuoma won the double thanks to her 17 league goals and 9 Challenge Cup goals. This was only the first of many titles. She scored 11 league goals the next season and also achieved 10 Challenge Cup goals. The Ufuoma Babes maintained their dominance in the domestic league. Akide was still the top goal scorer in 1997. Ufuoma won their fourth consecutive double with 14 league goals and 8 Challenge Cup wins. Pelican Stars defeated Ufuoma Babes both in the Cup and league in 1998, Akide scoring only 10 league goals and 7 Challenge Cup goals.

As Nigeria was participating in the first Women’s World Cup in China 1991, Akide joined Jegede Babes. Akide was transferred to central midfield with a well-established strike force. She took some time to get used to it. She was the highest goal scorer in both league and Cup by 1993. She scored 16 goals in the league, and eight in the Challenge Cup. The form was carried into the next season. She scored 15 goals in 1994 league season and 10, in Challenge Cup, to earn a call-up for coach Ismaila Maabo’s national camp. Jegede was not able to win either title with her goals.

Mercy was invited to camp in 1994 after she had two consecutive seasons with Jegede Babes where she scored 49 goals in two seasons. Another rush of goals earned her a recall, with 17 in the league and 9 Challenge Cup. Soon after her international debut, Mercy played as a winger in a World Cup qualifier against Sierra Leone. She celebrated it by scoring two goals. To cement her spot in the team, she scored another goal in the return leg. She was the first African Women Footballer Champion in 2001. She was also a FIFA World All-Star in 1999 and 2004.

In 2005, she was named by FIFA as one of its 15 Ambassadors for Women Football.
