He was the fourth son from the Italian father Giorgio and worked for a cruise ship as well as an Australian mother, Jennifer. Genocchio was raised at Lane Cove and attended Newington College between 1981 and 1986. In his youth, he was known to have an insufficient attention span and a low threshold for boredom and these traits have led him to becoming an artist critic. Genocchio earned an PhD in the field of history of art from the University of Sydney in 1996. Genocchio is a citizen of Australia as well as Italy.

Genocchio has left Blouin Media in January 2014 and was a part of Artnet in January 2014, where he was appointed editor-in-chief for Artnet News which is a 24 hour art news site. In December of 2015, he was named director for the Armory Show. He was fired in November 2017 following a series of allegations of sexual harassment were brought against him that were able to be traced back to his employment in Louise Blouin Media, Artnet and the Armory. The accused denied the accusations in a statement that said when he was in conflict with colleagues, he never did anything inappropriate and has since apologized for any actions he perceived as unprofessional.

As of October 2019, Genocchio is currently serving as the director at Large for Shoshana Wayne Gallery in Los Angeles and New York.

In the early part of 2010, he was appointed the editorial director of Louise Blouin Media, and the editor-in chief of Art+Auction Magazine, Modern Painters and artinfo.com. He resigned from his position in Modern Painters in 2011.
