Maya Usova is one of the most popular and richest Figure Skater who was born on May 22, 1964 in Nizhny Novgorod, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, Russia. Maya Valentinovna Usova, Russian: Maiia Valentinovna Usova, was born 22 May 1964. She is an ex-ice dancer from Russia. She is the 1992 World champion and 1993 European champion as well as a two-time Olympic silver medalist with Alexander Zhulin. They won gold medals at Skate America and NHK Trophy, Nations Cup and Winter Universiade. They represented Russia, the Soviet Union and the Unified Team.
They were third at the 1991 European Figure Skating Championships. Now they look poised to make a big breakthrough. After the compulsories, they led their teammates Klimova and Ponomarenko, then both of them into the free dance at 1991 World Figure Skating Championships. The final result of the free dance would be determined by the 3 top teams. Alexander Zhulin and Maya Usova skated strong free dances that appeared to guarantee the title. However, they had drawn first in final flight and received wide range of marks from judges. They were awarded four first-place ordinals in free dance but a strange situation saw them place third in free dance.
Usova/Zhulin skated together professionally from 1994 to 1997. They toured with Champions on Ice and won the World Professional Championships. From 1998 to 2000, Usova performed with former rival, Evgeni Platov.
At the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway, they won the silver medal behind Grishuk/Platov. They entered the free dance tied for first with Torvill & Dean, with Grishuk & Platov in third, but with all 3 teams in contention for the gold by winning the free dance. Despite a better overall set of ordinals in the free dance than Grishuk & Platov with three first and six seconds to five firsts, one second, and three thirds for Grishuk & Platov, they lost gold by the majority rule, Grishuk & Platov having the five first place ordinals they needed to win the free dance. After the controversial and upsetting loss Usova & Zhulin withdrew from the 1994 World Figure Skating Championships, where they had planned to end their amateur career and immeidately went professional.
The 1991-92 season saw Usova/Zhulin win silver at the 1992 European Championships, Lausanne, Switzerland. They then won their first Olympic medal, bronze at the 1992 Winter Olympics, Albertville, France. Silver at the 1992 World Championships, Oakland, California was Usova/Zhulin’s end of their season. They appeared to be in contention for victory at Worlds with three first-place ordinals ahead Klimova and Ponomarenko in their original dance. However, they lost all hope when they fell in the free dance. In September 1992, they moved together with Dubova to Lake Placid in New York.
