Domnina/Shabalin took silver at the 2008-09 Grand Prix Final and then won gold at the 2009 Worlds. After that, Shabalin went back to Germany for four more months of treatment on his left knee. Due to his knee problems, they missed the 2009-10 Grand Prix series. They returned to training in November 2009. Shabalin used a brace for competition and practice to limit his movement and protect his knee.

Domnina/Shabalin won the bronze medal at the 2010 Olympics and withdrew from the World Championships as a result of continued problems with his knee. He was diagnosed with osteoarthritis. Shabalin received the Overcoming Award at the 2010 Crystal Ice Awards held in October 2010 in Moscow. He was also appointed head coach of the Russian national ice dancing team.

Shabalin began skating aged four in Samara – although pushed into the sport by his parents, he grew to enjoy it by the age of 11. He began competing in ice dancing aged 11 or 12. At the age of 15, he moved to Bulgaria to skate with Margarita Toteva for that country but the partnership ended due to her injury. He then competed with Elena Khalyavina for Russia.

Shabalin suffered a meniscus injury in spring 2007. He had surgery to his right knee in May. After they had started working on a free Schindler’s List dance, they decided to add a faster section to it. Tatiana Tarasova advised them and they started work on a Masquerade Waltz free dance at the beginning of August. Shabalin had appendicitis surgery in September 2007. Then, he had issues with his left knee, and a second operation was performed in December. He won the 2008 Europeans, but was unable to continue skating. Despite therapy, the pain continued to prevent them from fully training and led to their withdrawal from 2008 World Championships. Shabalin was treated in Munich, Germany for five weeks while Domnina, a Russian gymnast, trained in Odintsovo near Moscow.
