His grandfather, Karl Kantor, self-exiled to Argentina in 1909 to be with his family and then returned to Soviet Russia in 1926. Tatiana, his mother, was a geneticist and created hybrids that were licensed internationally.

He founded the Moscow underground art group Krasnyj Dom (Red House) in 1983. He was the organizer and speaker of a well-known one-day event organized by the group at Moscow Institute of Philosophy in 1984.
