The new book Augmented City. He proposes A Paradigm Shift, Trento-Barcelona ListLab 2017, a new paradigm that makes cities more open-source, smarter, more creative, more resilient, and more sustainable. It is based on recycling to be more productive, fluid, and reticular. The incoming paradigm is based on ten challenges/approaches that need a strategic urban planning more incremental and adaptive, based on a new protocol called “cityforming”.
Reimagining Urbanism, a book by Trento ListLab (2014), is his first major work. He has examined and interpreted the problems of west cities (and Sicilian ones) in an age of never-ending transformation. Not only are they a strong attractor of people, but also as the subject of a new relationship to the suburbs and rural areas as well as the activators of creative eco-systems that are based on new digital/physical urbanmakers. This book suggests an urbanism that is capable of creating resources for a new urban metabolism. It can be reconciled to environmental protection with the reduction in consumption with consolidation of welfare state, food production, and the promotion of innovative startups to stimulate intelligence and creativity. The goal of the book is to expand urban agriculture and recycle to manage energy adaptation, climate efficiency, and climate change adaptation of the city of tomorrow.

He is a member of the Scientific Committee of Portus Plus, an international review that RETE publishes six times a month. The “Cityforming Protocol” is his innovative protocol for urban renewal. It allows you to activate the stationary metabolism in a decrepit urban area by allowing multiple cycles and increasing intensity. This creates a new urban sustainable environment. The Cityforming is an incremental and adaptive process that produces partial results which become the foundation for the next generative phase. Through the three stages of consolidation, colonisation and development, the Cityforming produces the “urban oxygen” necessary to create an ecosystem that can generate an active metabolism. This allows for the reactivation of inactive cycles, reconnects broken ones, or activates new metabolic pathways that are more adapted to the new identity of the transition areas. He was awarded the World’s Best Smart City Urban Planners Award in 2016 and 2017. He is the curator of the Italian Pavilion “Arcipelago Italia”, curated by Mario Cucinella and dedicated to the country’s internal areas. He also participates in the preparation of the strategic plan for Gibellina and Belice within the same pavilion. He curated the Manifesta 12 Studios exhibit in 2018, along with OMA’s partner Ippolito Pestellini-Laparelli. This was in the context of Manifesta 12: a nomadic Biennale of contemporary art in Palermo. Four international architecture laboratories (Architectural Association, Royal College of Art, TU Delft, and University of Palermo), have studied, researched, and outlined future scenarios in Palermo over two semesters. He participated in TEDx Rimini 2018 with a talk entitled “Augmented City” that focused on the new paradigm for augmented cities.
Carta, an Italian theorist on the “creative cities”, published the book Creative City. Dynamics, Innovations, Actions, Trento, ListLab, 2007, in which it is suggested a manifesto to “second generation” of creative cities, based upon 3C: Culture, Communication and Cooperation. Global crisis scenario has led to the creation of the paradigm for the “creative cities 3.0 beta version” and the identification of a third generation. This is capable of creating new cities and new cycles of life that are more open-minded, creative, brilliant, intelligent, sustainable, and can act as a driving force behind new urban policies. Rosario Pavia, RInio Bruntomesso and Rosario Pavia developed innovative urban design methods. These were first proposed in 2005. They were then synthesized in 2013. The “paradigm for the fluid and porous City” was a joint project between Sicily, Malta and Palermo.
With the book L’armatura culturale del territorio (1999) he inaugurated the Italian line of urban studies about the conservation and valorization of cultural heritage in the frame of European mainstream about city planning fueled by cultural identity, considered both as identity’s matrix tools and sustainable local development. His studies about the territorial cultural armature have produced some applied researches aimed at identifying qualitative and quantitative parameters for the formation of local cultural systems, in western Sicily and in other parts of Italy.
