Matthew Savoie was first recognized when he won the junior gold medal at the 1997 U.S. Championships. Between 1999 and 2006, he was in the top five at all U.S. Nationals. He won bronze medals in 2001 and 2004, 2006, and pewter medals in 2005, 1999, 2002, 2002 and 2005.

He also served as secretary for the LAMBDA (LGBT Law Students Association). Savoie graduated in 2009 and worked as an associate at Choate Hall & Stewart before he left in 2014 to become a coach for The Skating Club in Boston. Curran Oi was one of his students.
