Matthew Carragher (14 January 1976 28 December 2016) was a English player who played in 362 league matches for 12 months during the Football League. Carragher was an incredibly versatile defender who was described by the media as “a natural leader”.
Carragher began his career at Wigan Athletic after coming through the ranks of the Latics School of Excellence, and made his debut with a 6-3 win against Chester City in October 1993. Kenny Swain’s “Latics” then finished the 1993-94 season fourth from the bottom in the Third Division. The new manager Graham Barrow then led the Springfield Park club to 14th place in 1994-95 after which he was replaced John Deehan. Wigan was 10th in the 1995-96 season with two points behind Colchester United in the play-off zone. Carragher played 16 times during 1996-97 as Wigan were named the winners of their Third Division, finishing above Fulham by goal differences.
After his departure from Vale after which he signed with Stafford Rangers on non-contract terms and played 8 Southern League games, whilst Burton Albion boss Nigel Clough was contemplating whether or not they should offer the offer. Instead, he signed with Macclesfield Town in November 2003. He played in 18 games during 2003-2004, when Macclesfield Town’s “Silkmen” avoided relegation into the Conference by three positions and seven points. In a bizarre twist, the manager John Askey was replaced by Brian Horton in April 2004. He played in 39 games during 2004-2005, and was a part of the semi-final play-off defeat against Lincoln City, but Horton removed him from his contract with Moss Rose in May 2005.

He began his football career with Wigan Athletic in 1993, and played 119 games over the course of four seasons at the club. He also helped them to win the “Latics” to the Third Division title in 1996-97. Then, he joined Port Vale, and was later promoted to captain of the club and helped lead Port Vale’s “Valiants” to victory in the Football League Trophy in 2001. Despite playing 194 times at the team, he had to be let go in May of 2003. After a brief time with Stafford Rangers, he spent two years at Macclesfield Town, before retiring in 2005.
He joined Port Vale in 1997, following John Rudge judged Carragher to be a possible replacement for Dean Glover and Neil Aspin. Carragher played the cut of 25 First Division appearances in 1997-98 as he helped to lead the “Valiants” to beat Huddersfield Town by 4-0 on the last match day in order to keep them from relegation by one point which was at the expense Manchester City and Potteries derby opponents Stoke City. But he only played 12 times during 1998-99 and was never picked by the new manager Brian Horton. His first strike came for the club at Vale Park on 25 September 1999, during the 2-0 victory over Swindon Town, and went into the next 39 games after Vale were dropped to the Second Division at the end of 1999-2000. He played in 56 out of the club’s total 57 matches in 2000-01, as part of the defensive line consisting of Michael Walsh, Sagi Burton, Allen Tankard, and goalkeeper Mark Goodlad. He also played for”the “Valiants” at the Football League Trophy final played at the Millennium Stadium, which finished with a 2-1 victory over Brentford. He was a part of the backline in 2001-2002 with 47 appearances. He scored his only goal for Horton on 22 October 2002 in the 3-1 victory at home over Hull City in the Football League Trophy. In spite of playing 40 times in 2002-03, and being among the three defensive players who had settled (the other two were Sam Collins and Ian Brightwell) He was unexpectedly dismissed by Horton in May 2003.
Carragher died of cancer on 29 December 2016 at the age of 40. Former teammate Tony Naylor paid tribute to him as a “a cheeky chappie, a typical Scouse lad, confident and a nice guy with it”.
