Masayo Takahashi is one of the most popular and richest Cell Biologist who was born on June 23, 1961 in Osaka, Osaka Prefecture, Japan. Takahashi was born in Osaka Japan in 1961. After finishing her Faculty of Medicine at Kyoto University in 1986 and earning an PhD with a focus on visual pathology from the same university since 1992. Takahashi’s clinic research has been focused on the retina and ophthalmology. Opthalmology was her specialization because she was looking to have a family , and believed that the field will allow her to best manage work and personal life. In 1995, Takahashi began postdoctoral studies within the Salk Institute’s Laboratory of Genetics. She was enthralled by the possibilities for using stem cells in retinal and eye diseases. Since 2001, she has served as associate professor in the center for translational research.

In 2015, Takahashi was named the winner of the Ogawa-Yamanaka Prize for Stem Cell Biology. Nature Magazine named her as one of five “scientists to watch in 2014” and also nominated her to be one of the ten “people who mattered in 2014”.

Many challenges remain however to advance the technology and make it commercially available. One of the issues is the high cost and it is estimated that could take until around 2019 before the cost of the IPS treatment for AMD will is below ¥10 million ($95,500) The procedure is expected to set the path for more applications of IPS-cell technology, which offers the versatility of embryonic cells without their ethical talent. The future of IPSC therapy looks promising and regenerative medicine will likely become a big field in the future. IPSCs and ESCs have the potential to industrialize the cell therapy field because they can be expanded so that more cells can be made for many patients. Also photoreceptor transplantation along with IPS derived cells is to be expected within five years which should not only slow AMD but could possibly even restore some vision. In addition, the effect of regenerative medicine will not depend on the donors cells but depend on the host condition and the surgery skill.

Takahashi is a researcher for the Riken Center for Developmental Biology in Kobe which focuses on the clinical applications for iPS Cell (induced Pluripotent Stem Cell) technology in macular degeneration. In 2014, Takahashi was recognized by the British Science journal Nature as one of the “five to watch” global scientists due to her pioneering work in the field of regenerative medical research.

Masayo Takahashi (Gao Qiao Zheng Dai Takahashi Masayo born June 23rd the 23rd of June, 1959) is an Japanese medical doctor Ophthalmologist, physician as well as a stem cell research scientist.

In September 2014 her and her team from The Riken institute’s centre for development biology in Kobe made history with a world-first transplantation of cells derived from the induced pluripotent stem cells into the human body. The operation was performed as a research study in the field of clinical medicine and involved the creation of retinal sheets from iPS cells that were created in the lab of Shinya Yamanaka. iPS cells are produced by taking mature cells out of an individual and then reprogramming the cells to a embryonic state. This retinal layer was transferred into a woman who was aged 70 with age- related macular degeneration (AMD) which is an eye disorder which blurs the central area of vision, and may cause blindness. It was believed that the iPS cells were intended to slow the progression of AMD. Her research team and she employed iPS cells derived from the person’s skin cells. Then , in March, she together with her team performed the first-ever transplantation of retinal cells that were created using the donor iPS cells. The time and expense involved for the procedure has been drastically reduced due to the use of super donor cells. These are cells taken from people who have specific white blood cell types that don’t get disregarded in the body’s immune systems by the receiving patients.

In March 2017 a team led by Takahashi completed the first successful transplant of iPS-derived retinal cells into the eye of a patient suffering from advanced wet age-related macular degeneration. During the surgery the patient received a transplant of approximately 250,000 retinal pigment epithelial cells into the eye generated from donor-derived iPSCs. Results of this landmark study were published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

What did Masayo Takahashi do?

Takahashi performed the first iPSC human transplant in the world. The patient was a woman in her 70’s with age-related macular degeneration, which usually involves a treatment of injections into the eyes. Though the woman did not regain her eyesight, the procedure proved that iPSC retinal treatment was safe.
