The 2015 ITU Long Distance Triathlon champion and was second in both the 2009 and 2008 Ironman 70.3 World Championship. She was named the ITU Non-Olympic Female Athlete of the Year in both 2011 and 2012.
After the accident, Ellis changed her view of racing, and consequently changed coaches, deciding to work with Lindley. In 2014, Ellis chose to compete in the “triple-crown” of non-drafting championship races, including the 5150 Championships as well as the Ironman 70.3 World Championship, and the Ironman World Championship However these races, along with other races over the following 18 months, did not yield the results she had hoped for. Although she was awestruck by Lindley as a coach, Ellis acknowledged that the time she left as an elite athlete was short. So, she sought out Sutton to be her trainer in the month of May of 2015 in hopes of achieving the same success in races she achieved under his previous direction. As a sign of how her racing and training under the guidance of Sutton was going in the right direction, Ellis was crowned her first ITU Long Distance Triathlon Championships in the latter part of June. She was the leader of the race from beginning to end.
In 2013 Ellis continued to enjoy more success after finishing Ironman 70.3 Florida, defending her title at the Alpe d’Huez Triathlon, and winning first place in two races: Ironman France along with the Ironman Mont Tremblant events, that continued her streak of not losing at Ironman races other than those of the Ironman World Championships. On September 9 in 2013, while practicing for the Ironman World Championship in October, Ellis broke her collarbone after a bike crash on the island of Cozumel, Mexico. Following the accident, Ellis initially believed that she was not fit enough to race for the 2013 Ironman however, that was changed following surgery. Ellis reduced her recovery schedule into a single month with the aim of participating in the 12th of October at Kona, Hawaii. Ellis used her crash experience to raise funds in support of the Steadman Philippon Research Institute, the country’s biggest and most enduring non-profit that studies sports injuries. On Kona, Ellis came into T2 15th after the crash however she was unable to complete the race and compete the rest part of Kona’s race.
