She had suffered from long-term inflammatory bowel disease; the autopsy indicated this may have been a factor in her death, though it was not possible to identify the exact cause.
Her posthumous novel, The Margaret Thatcher School of Beauty (2014), is set in Buenos Aires during the Falklands War and tells the story of a group of individuals who gather once a week to recite poetry and tell tales of what has been.
The debut novel by Mehran, Pomegranate Soup (2005) tells an account of the lives of three girls who flee Iran during the Revolution and ultimately settle in an isolated town in the west of Ireland and open their own restaurant, the Babylon Cafe. Mehran utilized her family’s experiences to write this novel. It has several recipes and blends “Persian cooking with Irish living.” Pomegranate Soup has been translated into fifteen languages so far and is available in more than 20 countries around the world.
