Mark Joseph Salzman (born December 3rd 1959, in Greenwich, Connecticut) is an American writer. Salzman is most well-known for his memoir, published in 1986 Iron & Silk, which recounts his time as a teacher in China in the role of an English teacher in the 1980s.

In 2007 Mark Salzman, along with three other men were included in the documentary Protagonist which was directed by his spouse, Jessica Yu.

Salzman was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship in 2000. He along with the wife Jessica Yu, an Academy Award-winning filmmaker, as well as their daughter Ava and Esme reside in Los Angeles.

Salzman was born living in Ridgefield, Connecticut, the youngest child of a piano teacher mom and father who was a social worker. He was a student of Chinese Language and Literature at Yale University. He was awarded Phi Beta Kappa and was awarded the summa cum laude , in 1982. He then spent the next 2 years living at Changsha, Hunan, teaching English at Hunan Medical College [zh] and learning combative arts under Pan Qingfu, a Chinese martial arts instructor and Kung Fu movie actor. The experiences he had in China are detailed in his debut book, Iron & Silk: A young American meets bureaucrats, swordsmen and other people from contemporary China which was published in 1986. Salzman has received numerous literary awards to commemorate Iron & Silk. The novel became a film with the same name. Salzman composed the screenplay, and also starred his character in the movie. While the main location of the story took place in Changsha the film was made at Hangzhou, Zhejiang.

Salzman is a cellist. At the time of his high school years, he was playing the cello with the Norwalk Youth Symphony. The year 1996 was the first time he appeared as a guest cellist along with YoYo Ma as well as piano player Emmanuel Ax, and others at Alice Tully Hall for the 20th anniversary of Live From Lincoln Center.
