Gibson has left the driver’s seat to focus on identifying new talents. Gibson, along with Briggs Cunningham and Kerry Scherer began Cunningham Motor Sports in 1997. This team competed in ARCA as well as NASCAR Craftsman Trucks for three years. Scherer relocated with the team in Charlotte in 2000, however the team eventually came back to Georgia and joined Gibson within his Mark Gibson Racing (MGR) shop from 2007 until 2010. Gibson was a partner and the owner, and also the General Manager of the car number 77. In 2009, the team won nine races, and the driver Parker Kligerman would win the ARCA Rookie Of The Year.

Gibson’s racing journey began in 1974, when, at the age of 16 he started competing in races at the Volusia County Speedway. as well as in the race at New Smyrna Speedway, where Gibson won the track’s championship in 1979. He started competing for the ARCA Racing Series in 1981 and was transferred out of the Daytona Beach area to central Georgia in 1985. Gibson has been instrumental in the development of Sprint Cup Series and Nationwide Series driver Justin Allgaier and Camping World Truck Series driver Tayler Malsam who drove for Mark in 2008. In 2006, NASCAR driver Brad Keselowski drove Gibson’s car at Kentucky Speedway. This was Keslowski’s first stock car race. Mark Gibson has also worked with Timmy Hill, the NASCAR Nationwide series rookie of the year in 2011.
