Mark Blundell is one of the most popular and richest Formula One Driver who was born on April 8, 1966 in Barnet, United Kingdom. Blundell was born in Barnet, London. He began his motorsport at 14 years old racing motorcycles across England. At 17 he switched to four wheels and began his career as a driver in Formula Ford. In his debut season, Blundell finished 2nd in the British Junior Formula Ford Championships and British Junior Formula Ford Championships. The next season, Blundell won both the Esso British and Snetterton Formula Ford 1600 crowns. The following year, he started competing in the much more intense Formula Ford 2000 category, and also took his first race in the BBC Grandstand series. He was back in FF1600 to race on this year’s European Championship racing, taking the pole position, and placing fourth overall. He was the winner of yet another title in FF2000 and this time, winning the European title.
1997 was a year of great success. Blundell was within a corner of winning Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix but he ran out of fuel. This was an incident that he described as the biggest disappointment that he had ever experienced. The following race, he pipped Gil de Ferran on the final straight to beat the Grand Prix of Portland by 0.027 seconds. Blundell had further victories in races during Toronto and Fontana on his way to finishing sixth at the top of the podium. The same year, he also recognized as the British The Year’s Driver from Autosport magazine.
Since 2001, Blundell’s racing involvement has steadily declined, with only the occasional event. He did test a Dale Coyne Champ Car to help prepare Darren Manning for a one-off in the first CART race in Britain at Rockingham, and raced in the British round of the World Rally Championship. In 2003, along with Johnny Herbert and David Brabham, he finished second at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, completing a 1–2 sweep by Bentley. He also finished third at the 12 Hours of Sebring, finishing top among the Bentleys.
Blundell again crossed the Atlantic to focus on his sports car racing. He failed to finish Le Mans with the MG Lola team, though he and his teammates impressed. Off-track, Blundell joined ITV television in Britain as an analyst for the 2002 Formula One season. This position lasted until the end of the 2008 Formula One season when ITV lost coverage to the BBC.
1993 saw the returning to the world of Mark Blundell to the pinnacle of motorsports. A race with Ligier resulted in his first podium finish at the World Championships in South Africa and Germany. He placed tenth in closing World Championship standings. It was a one-year contract with Ligier However, in 1994, he joined Tyrrell. It wasn’t as successful in the same way as 1993 and Blundell had only one podium position in 1994’s Spanish Grand Prix, which was the final Formula One podium finish for Tyrrell but his image fell because he was often slower than his less acclaimed teammate Ukyo Katayama. In the final stages of the season, due to a lack of sponsorship, Tyrrell was released. This was an advantage since the departure of Nigel Mansell meant a return to McLaren for Blundell and this time in an actual race seat. With the future the world’s champion Mika Hakkinen, Blundell scored five points and again finished tenth on the standings finalized. 1995 also was a year of continued success for sports cars, including fourth place during Le Mans, but was Mark Blundell’s last year as a driver in Formula One, as the appointment of David Coulthard by McLaren meant that Mark had to look for an alternative job.
