Hickman was educated at East Forsyth High School and UNC-Greensboro. He played varsity college basketball with the UNC Greensboro Spartans for four years, beginning in 2003.
Hickman was a professional basketball player with Otopeni in Romania and Giessen 46ers Germany. He also played for Namika Lahti in Finland. In 2010, he joined the Italian 2nd division team Junior Casale. He signed with Scavolini Pesaro in July 2011 for the 2011-12 season.
On July 1, 2014, he signed a two-year contract with the Turkish club Fenerbahçe. On March 26, 2015, he suffered the Achilles tendon rupture injury in his right leg, which sidelined him off the court for the rest of season. His team eventually advanced to the EuroLeague Final Four for the first time in team’s history. On May 15, 2015, however, they lost in the semi-final game to Real Madrid, by a score of 87–96.
