Pestova was born the 20th of December 1964 at Sverdlovsk, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union. She was married to fellow skating pair Marat Akbarov. Together they have a child named Angela.

In the season of 1979-80, the Pestova/Leonovich took their first national championship and later won bronze in the 1980 European Championships. The team was selected for their first Winter Olympics in Lake Placid and placed fourth. They won bronze at their final competition of the season in that of the World Championships.

In their final competitive season, Pestova/Leonovich won their third national title and placed sixth at the 1983 World Championships.

Pestova was a team-up along with Stanislav Leonovich back in the year 1977. In the 1977-78 season they took silver in the Soviet Championships and were granted their European and World Championship debuts, placing 7th in both events. The following season began with a gold medal during Moscow News’s Prize of Moscow News. They were 4th in the Europeans while they placed 5th during Worlds in 1979.

Marina Nikolayevna Pestova, married surname: Akbarov, (Russian: Marina Nikolaevna Pestova , born on December 20, 1964) is an ex-pair skater who played for her country, the Soviet Union. Along with her skating partner Stanislav Leonovich was twice World medalist (silver in 1982, and bronze in 1980) and twice a European medalist (silver in 1982, bronze in) and a triple Soviet nation champion. The pair took part in the 1988 Winter Olympics and finished fourth.

Pestova started skating in the year 1968 in the Spartak Skating Club in Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg) with coach Igor Ksenofontov. Then, she moved in Moscow after 1976 in order to join Stanislav Zhuk. In the 1976-77 season she competed as a partner together with Mikhail Vazhenin.

The following season, Pestova/Leonovich placed fourth at the Soviet Championships and did not receive any assignments. They rebounded in 1981–82, taking their second national title and then winning silver at both the 1982 European Championships and 1982 World Championships.
